On Sunday, July 19, 2026, a young teenage football prodigy, Lamine Yamal solidified his place in football history by becoming the fifth teenage player to start and win a FIFA World Cup final.

At just 19 years and six days old, the Barcelona starlet reached the pinnacle of international football as Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

By lifting the iconic trophy, Yamal joined an incredibly exclusive club of teenage icons who conquered the world before their 20th birthdays.

By starting and winning the final, Yamal and his 19-year-old Spain teammate Pau Cubarsí etched their names alongside three of the greatest icons the sport has ever seen.

Prior to Sunday’s historic moment for Yamal, there were other World Greats who also achieved similar feat before him. They include:

• Giuseppe Bergomi (Italy, 1982): The legendary defender who lifted the trophy at 18 years and 201 days old.
• Ronaldo Nazario de Lima with Brazil won the World Cup at 17 years old  in USA ’94
• Kylian Mbappé (France, 2018): The explosive forward who took the world by storm at 19 years and 207 days old.
• Lamine Yamal & Pau Cubarsí (Spain, 2026): Entering the history books together as the fifth and sixth teenagers to achieve the feat.

Yamal did not just win the World Cup; he completed an unprecedented international double. Having already inspired La Roja to victory at UEFA Euro 2024 as a 17-year-old, his triumph in North America made him the first player under the age of 20 to win both the European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. He achieved both continental and global mastery on his very first attempt, maintaining a 100% success rate in major international tournaments.

The final against Argentina was billed as the ultimate generational showdown between Yamal and his childhood idol, Lionel Messi. While Argentina attempted to disrupt Spain’s rhythm through a highly physical and cynical approach, Yamal’s electric presence on the right wing constantly unsettled the South American defense.
