The National Association of Nigeria Footballers, NANF has berated the League Management Company, LMC for not doing enough to ensure that clubs participating in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL have standard medical facilities to handle emergency situations, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report

NANF made the statement while reacting to the death of Nasarawa United defender, Chineme Martins who slumped and died at the Lafia City Stadium during the matchday 23 clash with visiting Katsina United.

The NANF blamed Sunday’s death of Chineme Martins on LMC for its poor organization of the league.

The player union in a release signed by its President, Harrison Jalla, in the wake of the sad development described Martin’s death as ‘avoidable’ given good medical facilities.

Martins slumped on the pitch after colliding with a Katsina United player and gave up the ghost after all efforts to resuscitate him failed. The ambulance stationed at the stadium had failed to start while medics unconventionally tried but failed to revive him.

It is on this premise NANF, which has over the years displayed great concern for players’ welfare, as well as relentlessly striving to ensure sanity prevail in Nigerian football, expressed its disappointment at the league body.

NANF in the statement vowed to take appropriate steps to hold LMC as well as Nigeria Football Federation culpable for Martins’ avoidable death.

“The unfortunate death of Nassrawa United Football Club player on Sunday could be attributed to the gross inefficiency of the LMC. What happened to standard medical provision in a premier league venue?

“The NANF would take appropriate steps to hold the corruption infested LMC and the NFF for the avoidable death of Chineme Martins.

“This ugly incident is one too many and totally unacceptable,” the statement made available to our correspondent read.

News of Martins’ death broke after the match, Nasarawa United won 3-0, via Chinedu Ohanachom’s hat-trick recorded on 53, 61, 88 minutes.

The news left players and officials, as well as Governor Abdullahi Sule, who was also at the Stadium weeping inconsolably in face of a resounding victory.

Chineme Martins is the second Nigerian player to die on the field of play in the country after former Super Eagles player, Samuel Okwaraklji slumped and died at the Surulere Stadium, Lagos on August 12, 1989 in a World Cup qualifying match against Angola.
