Super Falcons stalwart Osinachi Ohale has officially called time on her international football career after 16 years, leaving behind an indelible legacy as one of the most decorated defenders in African women’s football history.

​Since making her senior debut in 2010, the 32-year-old central defender earned over 80 caps for Nigeria. Her career spans four FIFA Women’s World Cups, seven Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) appearances, and five continental titles. 

​Emotional Farewell Message

​Releasing a heartfelt statement to announce her departure from the national team, Ohale reflected deeply on her journey wearing the green and white jersey: 

​”I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”

​”To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low. Your love made wearing this jersey even more special.”

​Ohale has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s backline across three different decades.

​She was an integral part of five WAFCON-winning squads (2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024). In the 2024 WAFCON final against hosts Morocco, she scored a key goal to help complete a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory. 

​ Across four World Cup appearances (2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), her standout performance came at the 2023 tournament in Australia. She put in a Player of the Match performance and scored a crucial header to secure Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over host nation Australia. 

Ohale also helped the Super Falcons secure qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, ending Nigeria’s 16-year absence from the Olympic tournament.

Following Osinachi Ohale’s announcement of her retirement from international football on September 25, 2026, heartfelt messages have flooded social media from all corners of the football world.

After an illustrious 16-year career, featuring 86 caps, 4 FIFA Women’s World Cups, and 5 WAFCON titles, her teammates, coaches, and football bodies have shared their profound gratitude for her service to the Super Falcons.

Onome Ebi: “Thank you for making football so enjoyable to play. You will always be my best-ever number six. A true rock and a phenomenal sister on and off the pitch.”

Asisat Oshoala & Michelle Alozie: Short, powerful, and unanimous, both players heralded Ohale across their platforms, simply calling her an absolute “Legend.”

Rasheedat Ajibade: “Thank you, Senior, for always leading by example and defending the Nigerian badge with your whole heart every single time you put on the green and white shirt.”

Glory Ogbonna: “It has been an absolute honour to share the pitch with you. Thank you for the guidance, the leadership, and for being our ‘senior commander’ in battle.”

Tosin Demehin: “Learning from you and playing alongside you has been a special part of my own growth as a defender. Thank you for setting the standard so high for the next generation.”

Rinsola Babajide: Hailed her standard of excellence, praising her as “the absolute best” in the business.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF): “Thank you for 16 years of pure dedication, sacrifice, and unalloyed service to the nation. You gave your youth, your strength, and your heart to the Super Falcons. Five African titles, four World Cups, and memories that will last forever. Happy retirement, legend!”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF): Joined the football community in celebrating her global impact, stating: “Five WAFCON titles represent one immortal legacy. Thank you, Osinachi, for every single battle fought, every trophy lifted, and every memory given to African football.”
