Head coach of the South African women’s national team, Desiree Ellis says her team needs to improve its decision making in the final third.

The former Banyana Banyana team captain was speaking after her side’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Argentina at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they disappointingly surrendered a two-goal lead to drop valuable points in New Zealand.

The reigning TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions looked home and dry for their first FIFA Women’s World Cup victory after goals from Linda Mothlalo and Thembi Kgatlana set the African champions on course for a victory.

However, poor decision making and questionable defending saw the South Africans surrender a two-goal cushion in a space of five minutes to only walk away with a draw.

“I don’t think it’s the defense to be honest. I think the defense held out quite well. I think its the chances that we create. If you make better decisions, we talk differently. You cannot create all those chances and they only get two chances and they score” said Ellis.

“It’s about taking our chances. It’s about making better decisions in the final third. It doesn’t matter who scores, it’s about putting someone in who is in a better position and in a better position to score. It comes back to haunt us every time” concluded a visibly disappointed Ellis.

Up next for the African champions will be a must win encounter against Italy on Wednesday, which will be the only result that will improve their chances of advancing any further in the competition.
