2020 Gburugburu Unity Cup Kicks-off In Nsukka Local Government

The 2020 edition of Gburugburu Unity Cup has commenced with the twenty wards of Nsukka Local Government Area in participation. The football tournament was kicked off by the Council Chairman, Cosmas Ibeziako Ugwueze, in presence of the Enugu State Football Association Chairman, Tony Ugwu; Vice Chairman, Walter Ozioko and other stakeholders of the local government in attendance at St. Charles Football Field, Opi – Nsukka
The kick off match was between Ibeku Ward and Eha Ulo ward with a brief ceremony that attracted people from all the Wards, office holders and lovers of football alike. Lovers of football enjoyed themselves with a hartrick from ChukwuEbuka Ugwu who scored in 5th minutes, 8th and 47 minutes of the play. Emeka Onugwu on the other hand scored the only goal for Eha Ulo ward in 12th minutes. A substitute – Chinwe Ugwuagbo in 58th minutes when he scored the last goal that made it four goals to one(4 – 1) in favour of Ibeku – Opi ward.
Nsukka Local Government Council Chairman believes, “the match is delivering on the purpose of which it is meant for – foster peace, brotherhood and entertainment. You can see that we are all entertained”. On issue of infrastructure in the Stadium, the Chairman promised to commence action immediately but on the size of the Stadium, he said, “nothing can be done now”.
According to the Chairman, “two best teams in the tournament will represent the the Local Government in the GBURUGBURU Zonal Competition that will commence immediately after Christmas” According to the organisers, 1st position in the tournament goes home with one million naira, second seven hundred and fifty thousand naira, third five hundred thousand naira and other consolation prices to be given.
Action continues today at various centers in the four Development Areas of the Council.
