The Uncommon Story Of How Jerry Kanu Saved Enyimba From Disbandment
But for the daring initiative of Hon Jerry Kanu, two-time African Champions and nine eight-time NPFL title winners, Enyimba of Aba would have been disbanded way back in 1991.
This revelation was made by Hon Kanu himself when a delegation of the Sports Writer Association of Nigeria, SWAN, South East Zone paid him a working visit at his Aba residence.
Kanu was a former chairman of the People’s Elephant and President of Transmedia Group who also was Published of Global Sports Newspapers, Absolutely.
The delegation was led by the Chairperson of the SWAN South East Zone Mrs Chigozie Chukwuleta.
“Col Abdulkarim Adisa Was The Acting Military Administrator of Imo State at that time”, Honourable Kanu recalled.
“And we had just 24 hours to the close of registration of clubs for that year’s Professional League and Enyimba was risking disqualification on the strength of its inability to raise funds to register.
“I went to the Government House, Owerri, to meet His Excellency, on the predicament that Enyimba was risking.
“Surprisingly, His Excellency ordered me back to Aba with a mandate to disband the club because, according to him, the state has no money to continue to run the team.
“I was shocked by the response but I mustered the courage and asked the fearsome military officer, if Kwara Bombers had been disbanded by the Kwara State Military Administrator and he replied with an emphasis that I should go back to Aba and disband club.
“At this point I left Owerri and headed for Aba, then to the stadium where I met people who were already anxiously waiting to hear the good news I brought from Owerri.
“But I assured them that no matter what, I was going to sponsor the team to ensure that they registered for the league.
“So I sent the club’s secretary to Lagos that same evening and ensured that Enyimba was registered for the professional football league in the country that year”, the Oshimiri 1 of Abriba narrated.
