The President, Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick has declared that winning the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, AWCON is Nigeria’s birth-right.

Mr Pinnick who disclosed this in interview last week assured that the federation will support the Super Falcons who have won the competition a record nine times to make them one of the world’s best women teams.

Speaking in Abuja when he visited the headquarters of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Pinnick said, “We have gotten a new coach for the senior women national team and there are new foreign-based Nigerian players who have declared their interest to play for the country. These are young and enterprising players that will help us prove that winning women AFCON is our birthright.”

He also disclosed that the NFF is planning two friendly matches for the team to get them ready for their engagements.

The NFF recently contracted Coach Randy Waldrum to coach the Falcons following Thomas Dennerby’s unceremonious exit from the team.

The new coach has a former Super Falcons goalkeeper and captain, Ann Chiejine, and Wemimo Matthew as his assistants.

Although the ladies have been dominant in the continent, the NFF has been accused of not doing enough to enable the women shine at the global stage.

The Super Falcons have never gone beyond the Round of 16 berth at the FIFA Women’s World Cup reaching the feat twice in 1991 and 2019.

The 2019 edition of the tournament held in France was marred by protests by the players who vowed not to leave their hotel until their match entitlements were paid. It took the intervention of world football governing body, FIFA for the NFF officials to be bail out of the situation.

Nigeria is the defending champions of the last edition of the AWCON held in Ghana in 2018.

The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled by CAF after the outbreak of Covid-19
