The Chairman, FCT Football Association, Adam Mouktar has bared his mind on the lingering and seemingly endless call in some quarters that the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr be sacked. And charge Nigerians to stop looking for a scapegoat as the problem in Nigeria football is deeper than sacking the German, Bestchoicesports.com.ng can report.
Expressing his view on the desirability or otherwise of sacking the German coach who guided the Eagles to 3rd place finish in the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Mouktar said that the problem with Nigeria football goes beyond sacking Rohr.
He opined that the 66-year old has been able to discover players since his engagement in 2016 as well as meeting the target set for him by the employer in the Nations Cup.
“Well I’ll say first and foremost, before you go to a tournament you must have been given a target and he said he met his target which is the semi-finals. I don’t know, but people have questioned various things about him but I think he’s done well generally and he’s understood our system and he has helped in discovering new players for the national team.
“He can only work within what he has. He can’t give beyond that. We have to develop our football. We don’t expect Gernot Rohr to come overnight to Nigeria and develop new talents. It’s a process. It takes time and years. So we have to do the grassroots work and then make a pool available to whoever the national team coach is.
“We are just looking for scapegoat but I think our problem is deeper, deep rooted and we have not done the right things. We have neglected grassroots development and we have to go back to that and we must have a blueprint. England has a blueprint called the DNA which is a total blueprint that is touches on everything. We must have that kind of document to develop football,” he said.
