Looking at the football menu through the week, you get to understand why football fans are an excited lot.

The grandest club competition, the UEFA Champions League returns with the opening Group Stage matches set for Tuesday and Wednesday nigh.

Also on the menu is Europe’s second-tier club competition, the Europa League, set for Thursday night.

The Champions League has exciting clashes as top teams are set to light the opening round of fixtures.

We take a look at some of the key matches to look forward to;

Chelsea vs Sevilla

Frank Lampard’s limping Chelsea host the Europa League champions at their Stamford Bridge grounds.

This is the first time the two sides are meeting in any competition, and it will be interesting to see who takes the bragging rights among the two group favourites.

PSG vs Man United

Last season’s finalists will be on a revenge mission when they host Man United at the Parc des Princes. The Reds knocked out the French side two seasons ago following an incredible comeback after trailing 2-0 from the first leg.

Neymar, who missed the match and was later charged for his comments after the final whistle, will be eager to guide his side past the Reds.

 Lazio vs Borussia Dortmund

Ciro Immobile will most likely be in the starting lineup when they welcome his former side, Borussia Dortmund to Rome.

The two sides have met only once in the  European competition, during the 1995 UEFA Cup quarterfinals.

It will be Dortmund’s fifth successive Champions League campaign, but a first for Lazio in 13 years.

Bayern Munich vs Atlético Madrid

The Allianz Arena will be the ground where Bayern Munich start their title defence against a formidable opponent in  Diego Simeone’s Atletico.

Both teams warmed up for the fixture with wins in respective leagues, Bayern seeing off Arminia Bielefeld 4-1, while Atleti were 2-0 winners against Celta Vigo.

The two teams have faced each other four times, with the record even; two wins and a similar number of losses.

Ajax vs Liverpool

Liverpool will miss a number of key players when they travel to face Ajax on Wednesday night. Thiago Alcantara, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Alisson Becker are all out, which is worrying for Jurgen Klopp.

Despite having 10 Champions League titles between them, it will be the first time in 54 years that they will be going head-to-head.
