Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Amb. Lucky Isaac Yargwa, has commended the initiative of the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Major General Shu’aibu Ibrahim for joining forces with some corporate organisations to establish a Skills Acquisition Centre at the Magaji Dan Yamusa NYSC Orientation Camp in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

The Commissioner, accompanied by the Director, Youth Development cum Covering Permanent Secretary of the State’s Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Umar Abubakar, stated this when he was led on a guided tour of the Centre and other facilities within the NYSC Orientation Camp by the State Coordinator of the Scheme, Abdullahi Ahmad Jikamshi on Friday, 11th March, 2022.

Amb. Yargwa disclosed that the visit was his first since his appointment as Commissioner by Governor Abdullahi Sule late last year, and was full of good remarks for the NYSC Director-General for his purposeful leadership style which cuts across virtually all facets of human endeavours since he took over at the helm of affairs of the Scheme in Nigeria.

“I am here to introduce myself to the Camp since my appointment as Commissioner and to see what is happening here, more so that by next week, the current crop of Corps Members here will be sent to their various places of primary assignments.

“I am equally here to see some of the laudable projects being executed by the combined teams of some Corporate Organisations and influenced by the DG of the NYSC who, incidentally, is a son of the State.

“I am highly impressed by the settings of the new North-Central Skills Acquisition Centre which is still under construction. It’s, unarguably, one of the best I have come across in recent times at Orientation Camps across the country.

“The Skills Acquisition Centre has in it, Garments Making Machines, Bottle and Table Water Machines as well as Bakery Machines.

“This will, no doubts, help in job creations, both for the Corps Members and our own children in Nasarawa State”, he began.

He called on beneficiaries to take advantage of the Centre in order to become productive to themselves and society alike as white collar jobs are hard to come by these days.

The Commissioner who is also the Chairman of the NYSC State’s Governing Board, however, observed that there was an urgent need for Government to respond to some immediate needs of the Keffi Orientation Camp to enable its occupants effectively carry out their tasks.

“Having gone round the facilities, I think there are areas the State Government will have to intervene urgently in order to make them habitable for the occupants and bring out their best, these, I will formally inform His Excellency, the Governor, for the next line of action.”

Yargwa noted that Government will continue to create enabling environment for Corps Members posted to the State to carry out their primary assignments without fear or molestation.

“The Governor Abdullahi Sule administration will continue to do all it can to make Corps Members enjoy their service period in the State as we are peaceful, accommodating and business-oriented.”

Speaking earlier, State Coordinator of the NYSC, Abdullahi Ahmad Jikamshi, thanked the Commissioner for the visit, highlighting ongoing projects at the Camp and some of the challenges they are currently facing.

“We visited some areas in the camp which include the Multi-Purpose Hall, and where we are currently using for our lectures and trainings; the Staff Quarters and the new Skills Acquisition Centre being constructed by a group of Corporate Organisations in collaboration with the NYSC headquarters, Abuja.

“Our major challenge for now is the inadequate lecture hall.

“The one we have now has been here for over ten years, but now too small. And this is associated with the fact that the number of Corps Members in the Camp here keeps increasing.

“We need a bigger hall that can accommodate a minimum of three thousand people so that these Corps Members can be taught in a more conducive atmosphere, and also use it to learn skills.

“We are lucky to be the host of the North-Central Zonal Skills Acquisition Centre.

“This facility will surely benefit our members because we already have our skills trainers who are using what we have to train Corps Members in various skills.

“The other challenge is inadequate accommodation for Camp Officials.

“Though in our little way, we are trying to see what we can do, even though I believe with the support of the State Government, we will overcome all these challenges”, he concluded.

In a related development, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nasarawa State, Amb. Lucky Isaac Yargwa, during the week, visited the the Director-General of the NYSC at his office in Abuja.

The Commissioner was accompanied by Directors of the Ministry and Senior Special Assistants to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Youth Development and Sports Affairs.

The visit was to seek collaborations with sons and daughters of the State holding positions of leadership across various organisations and agencies aimed at helping youth of the State get engaged in meaningful ventures.
