Manchester United Vs Liverpool Match Postponed After Violent Protest

The star match of week 34 in the English Premier League between Manchester United and defending champions, Liverpool slated to hold at Old Trafford on Sunday has been indefinitely postponed.

The postponment became inevitable after the match was delayed for several minutes due to protest by the home fans.

Hundreds of United fans marched into the stadium and onto the field in defiance of the Glazer family’s ownership, lighting flares before the game.

The game, which had been scheduled for a 4:30 (WAT) kickoff, had been postponed indefinitely, but it has now been decided that it will not be played today.

After refusing co-owner Joel Glazer’s apologies for the club’s botched attempt to enter the Super League, fans planned a rally.

The two-week-old breakaway competition collapsed after only two days due to massive pressure from fans, governing bodies, and politicians.

Earlier this week, a group of United supporters stormed into the club’s Carrington training ground, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and midfielder Nemanja Matic both responding to the demonstrators.

As they entered the stadium on Sunday, referee Michael Oliver and former United captain Gary Neville had their vehicles surrounded.

Those who obtained entry to Old Trafford did so by breaking down barriers in the Munich Tunnel, despite security guards’ best efforts to prevent it.

After the first wave of demonstrators, police evacuated the stadium twice, with fans returning largely unharmed, until the immediate area around Old Trafford was drained of supporters.

However, the decsion has been taken to call the match off.

It was earlier reported that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to see today’s match between Manchester United and Liverpool taking place, as the protests at Old Trafford this afternoon begin to turn violent, with fans and police clashing outside the stadium.

With the 2020/2021 EPL season last matches scheduled to be played on May 23rd, the league managers are in a race against time to announce a new date for the aborted match.
