Following two successive barren draws against Enugu Rangers and Abia Warriors, head coach of Akwa United, Kennedy Boboye has charged his players to prove their worth and go for victory on Sunday when they engage Kwara United of Ilorin on Match-day 24 of the 2020/2021 season at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium – the Nest of Champions.

The Promise Keepers are second on the NPFL standings with 42 points from 23 matches, just two points behind Kano Pillars who have 44 points from the same number of games.

The two-time Federation Cup Champions recorded a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture in Ilorin on Match-day 4, and coach Boboye has inspired his players not to leave any stone unturned on Sunday when they file out against third-placed Kwara United.

“Our last two games didn’t give us the desired results, we only managed to pick just two points from a possible six and that wasn’t good enough considering our ambition this season. We played well in those games but we were unable to score and we have taken time in training to work on our finishing.

“We have moved on from those games and at the moment our concentration is on the match against Kwara United on Sunday. We cannot afford to drop anymore points especially here in Uyo. We have to go all out and fight for victory, we have to make it count because for us to achieve our aim this season we have to win matches and stay in a comfortable position on the log.

“We are anticipating a tough match against Kwara United. They are a good team and are also playing well. Last season they won us here in Uyo but that won’t happen again on Sunday because we are mentally and physically prepared for this game”.

Undefeated in their thirteen (13) previous league matches comprising seven victories and six draws (7W, 6D), Akwa United have scored in nine of their eleven home matches this season and only failed to score in just two home games.

With 17 goals scored in eleven home matches and three conceded, Akwa United have one of the best attacking-line and the most resoulate defence in the league having conceded the least number of goals (12) after 23 games.

Assistant captain Ubong Friday is set to return to action after serving one-match ban for accumulated yellow cards. Iconic striker Mfon Udoh who was rested for the game against Abia Warriors may also be avialbale for selection, but striker Charles Atshimene won’t play any part in the game after being sent off in Okigwe in mid-week.

Goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka with twelve (12) clean sheets in eighteen (18) games is expected to provide the needed cover between the sticks for the Promise Keepers as they seek to return to the top of the NPFL log on Sunday.

The Match-day 24 fixture will kickoff at 4pm at the iconic Godswill Akpabio International Stadium – Nest of Champions and it be played with strict adherence to all Covid-19 guidelines.
