The rot bedeviling Nigeria sports in recent times have continued unabated with the shocking revelation that Nigeria is missing at the 2022 Confederation of Africa Athletics Region 2 Championship in Ghana.

The minister of youth and Sports, Sunday Dare as well as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN have remained silent over this embarrassing development, as Nigeria who are defending champions did not register appearance.

The Ghana Athletics Association CEO, Bawa Fuseini lamented the absence of Nigeria at the ongoing Confederation of African Athletics CAA Region II Athletics Championship taking place in Cape Coast, Ghana.

Fuseini who doubles as the Secretary of CAA Region, queried why Nigeria who are defending champions of the championship did not send entries to the regional championship, despite several reminders to the Nigeria Athletics of Nigeria.

“It is quiet unfortunate not to see Nigeria who are back-to-back defending champions of this championship not sending entries, despite several reminders to the Nigeria Athletics of Nigeria. I made several attempts to speak with the president of the federation, but all in vain.” Fuseini lamented.

The competition was declared opened by the President of Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region ll, Engr. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau on Thursday in Cape Coast, Ghana.

Engr.Gusau said the championship served as qualification to the U-20 World Athletics to be staged in Colombia this year, will witness 11 West African Countries battling for honours at the Championship.

Recall, the championship has produced the likes of Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, Enoach Adegoke and others.

It could be recalled that last week, the federal government through the ministry of youth and sports banned basketball from participating in international competitions for two years. The government cited crisis in the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF as the reason for the suspension.
