It sounds like a fairytale, but it is a fact that a South African Club have been handed a life ban after it won a league match by 59-1 with 41 of the goals scored by their own players.

A lower division South African club, Matiyasi FC, have been banned for life after scoring 9 goals in one match.

Matiyasi FC, who were hunting for promotion to the Provincial ABC Motsepe League, beat Nsami Mighty Birds 59-1, with 41 of the goals scored as own-goals in one-sided scandalous match

Another player who was given a red card in the first half also scored a goal in the second half putting football authorities at a loss as to the possibility of such a scenario happening without any match fixing

The incident occurred last two weeks and the South Africa’s football authorities, the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) have now proscribed the Matiyasi Football Club.

SAFA’s regional office in Limpopo summoned both Matiyasi FC and Nsami Mighty Birds to a Disciplinary Committee hearing on 25 May 2022 in Giyani.

Both teams were charged and found guilty of corruption and going against the association’s statutes.

SAFA then announced that Matiyasi FC has been permanently banned from all football activities while both teams have also been given a five-year suspension within the region.
