The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF have expressed doubt over Augustine Eguavoen’s technical ability to lead the Super Eagles to 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON glory of as the federation has intensified search for a foreign coach

Coach Eguavoen was early December appointed interim coach of the Super Eagles following the sacking of former handler, Gernot Rohr.

With just 18 days to the commencement of the 33rd edition of AFCON in Cameroon, the NFF has come out to say it is in search of a foreign coach to take over the team.

NFF boss, Amaju Pinnick stated in Lagos that Eguavoen would be more using to the federation in his role as technical director than coach of the senior national team.

“We know that Eguavoen can do the job expertly, but we also know that he will be more useful controlling the technical department. However, if we cannot get the coaches to start work immediately, we will empower them to take the team to Cameroon,” he said.

Pinnick however gave condition on which Eguavoen would retain the job on a permanent basis.

“And if Eguavoen wins the Nations Cup, we might have a rethink. In that case, the foreign coach will now become the technical director, while Eguavoen takes the position of technical adviser.”

“We know Eguavoen can do it, but we also want someone who can do it better. If we are unable to sign him soon, then we will work with the current team. But I am not going to tell you that if we have him signed today, he is not going to lead the team to the AFCON.”

Super Eagles will be seeking to win their 4th Africa crown in Cameroon but they will first navigate the hurdles posed by Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau in Group D of the preliminary round of the competition.
