Nigeria’s senior female football team, the Super Falcons have agreed to boycott their opening 2023 World Cup match against Canada on Friday July 21.
The tournament kicks off on Thursday, July 20 in Australia and New Zealand.

However, the match, though barely two weeks away, the nine-time Africa champions have vowed to go on strike and shun the match following Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to cancel their match entitlements at the competition
Report emerged Friday that the NFF cited FIFA’s provision of a $30,000 (₦22.085 Million) payment to each player as a reason for canceling their bonuses. This decision has sparked discontent among the players, who believe their rightful bonuses should not be compromised.
Consequently, the senior players including captain Onome Ebi, Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, Ohale Osinachi, Tochukwu Oluehi, and Desire Oparanozie, expressed their determination to press for their demands.
“We are ready to go as far as missing our first game against Canada on July 21 because this has to stop,” one of the senior players told Punch
During the meeting, it was agreed upon that the team would gather the necessary information to validate their requests. Once confirmed, they will proceed with their protest. This united front demonstrates their unwavering commitment to fighting for what they believe is just and fair.
