Barely four days after Hervé Renard and the Atlas lions of Morocco were eliminated from the 2019 AFCON by the squirrels of Benin, the French tactician has resigned from his post as head coach, Bestchoicesports.com.ng understands
Morocco lost 4 -1 to Benin on penalties, after failing to beat a 10 man Benin side in 120 minutes. Morocco had finished top of their group with 9 points from three games.
The two times AFCON winner (with Zambia and Ivory Coast), joined the Atlas lions of Morocco in February 2016 and led the team to the FIFA World Cup in 2018 in Russia.
News of Renard’s imminent resignation was first announced this Tuesday morning, by Moroccan sports channel Arriyadia on their Twitter page, but our sources have now confirmed that he has stepped down.
Moroccans believed the 50 year old French man could pilot their team to their second AFCON glory, since they last won in 1976, but unfortunately their 43 years wait continues.
Hervé Renard’s resignation now makes it four coaches, who have either been sacked or have left their post, after poor performances in the AFCON. Javier Aguirre of Egypt, Sunday Chidzambwa of Zimbabwe and Emmanuel Amunike of Tanzania were all fired after their team’s poor outing in the AFCON. More managerial casualties are expected in the days ahead.
