Southampton got the going tough at Old Trafford on Tuesday night after suffering a heavy 7-0 loss to Manchester United.
Even before the Saints could settle, they were reduced to ten men in the fourth minute when Alexandre Jankewitz, who was making his first start for the club, was sent off following a rash tackle on Scott McTominay. From the minute they were rendered less, the proceeding belonged to United.
The opener for United was to come after a combination of both fullbacks with Luke Shaw providing the cross from the left for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to convert from close range for his first Old Trafford goal. It was 2-0 in the 25th minute with Shaw once again being the orchestrator. After excellent work from the Englishman from the left, Mason Greenwood pulled the ball back to Rashford about 14 yards from the Southampton goal with the striker firing past McCarthy after adjusting his feet.
Jan Bednarek was to turn a Rashford cross into his own net minutes later before Edinson Cavani scored a fourth with a header following a Shaw cross; United racing for the half time breather with a four-goal cushion.
With the game seemingly done, United was to bring Anthony Martial and Van de Beek for Edinson Cavani and Luke Shaw but it was Southampton who thought they had a lifeline when Che Adams out the ball past De Gea in the 53rd minute but his goal was chopped off after consultation with the VAR.
Daniel James was to be thrown in for Rashford with United extending their lead through Martial in the 69th minute after a perfect pass from Bruno Fernandes. Southampton reacted by bringing on Nathan Redmond for Danny Ings but it was United who struck again in the 72nd minute through McTominay with a 20-yard drive that easily beat the keeper.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors eight minutes from time when Bednarek was sent off following a foul on Martial in his own box with Bruno Fernandes tucking in the resultant penalty. Martial was to add the eighth in the 90th minute before Daniel James wrapped up the proceedings in added time.
In another match of the day, Crystal Palace came from a goal down to beat Newcastle 2-1.
